# NCRERN Newsletter: Fall 2023

November 28, 2023

With the changing of the seasons, we are delighted to welcome you to the fall edition of NCRERN’s Newsletter. It's hard to believe that NCRERN started working with partner districts four years ago! Amidst some of the most formidable challenges faced by the education sector, our districts have demonstrated resilience and determination. This year, as NCRERN embarks on the school year alongside 60 districts across the country, we are particularly thankful for our districts' unwavering commitment and partnership. In this newsletter, we’re excited to share what NCRERN and our partner districts have been up to during this busy fall!

**New York & Ohio Rural Research Network (RRN)**
Our New York & Ohio rural research network (RRN) districts are repiloting What’s Your Path with 9th graders and a Postsecondary Transitions Checklist with 12th graders. These interventions aim to support students’ postsecondary pathway exploration and transition into these pathways. Our RRN districts first piloted these interventions last year, and our districts saw a lot of potential in these interventions but also identified several areas where implementation could be improved and refined. Based on this feedback, partner districts are repiloting these interventions in the 2023-24 year. We’re excited to learn from our districts as they continue with these interventions and, more broadly, about what postsecondary readiness and transitions look like for our rural students.

**National Replication Network**
In addition, 43 rural districts across 15 states serving over 21,000 students joined NCRERN’s national replication network to pilot and test the LIFT Up Attendance program during the 2023-24 school year. LIFT Up Attendance is a user-friendly program that provides personalized messages that inform caregivers about their student’s total number of absences each month. We are fortunate to have partnered with Infinite Campus to integrate the program into districts’ existing messaging platforms to make the program easy to use with minimal time required.

**NCRERN at NFARE**
Most recently, NCRERN attended the National Forum to Advance Rural Education (NFARE) in Chattanooga, TN, where our work was featured in two sessions. During the pre-conference event, NCRERN Senior Research Manager Elise Swanson took the main stage as a featured panelist, sharing insights about how to make data and research relevant, accessible, and actionable for rural practitioners, communities, and policymakers. During the conference learning sessions, Senior Research Program Manager Kellie Solowski was joined by Natalie Brubaker, Superintendent of Susquehanna Valley CSD and NCRERN-partner district, as part of a panel exploring the conditions necessary to cultivate and sustain research-practice partnerships in rural contexts. NCRERN also had the opportunity to engage in conversations with attendees at our exhibit table and enjoyed sharing in others' excitement about making data more actionable for rural schools and districts.

**Rural Education Resource Roundup**
Lastly, we’d like to showcase rural education resources that our team has gathered on rural mental health, professional development opportunities, motivation in rural adolescents, and an exciting opportunity aimed at rural schools and districts in exploring school-community partnerships.
