Who We Are

Who We Are

In 2019, with funding from the Institute for Education Sciences (IES), NCRERN was launched as a rural research and development center to contribute to the body of research on rural education.

Since its founding, NCRERN has partnered with the rural districts, state education agencies, educational service agencies, and regional data centers in our network to implement and test a variety of evidence-based innovations. Our goal is to share our learnings about what works in rural education and how to conduct rural research on an ongoing basis in order to bring new resources and evidence to the field of rural education.

Our initial continuous improvement network, focused in 49 districts across New York and Ohio, tested interventions related to attendance (from 2021-2022 school years), postsecondary readiness (from 2021-2024 school years), and postsecondary entry (from 2022-2024 school years).

After finding personalized messaging for attendance to be a successful intervention, we replicated it across 47 districts in sixteen states serving over 40,000 students in 2022-23 and 2023-2024. We have forthcoming work on the results of this replication, and aim to share best practices and findings learned from our network.
